Djokovic, Baghdatis Impressive in Tuesday Victories

No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic became the first player to reach the third round at the Rogers Masters as he defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-3. The 20-year-old Serb converted three of five break points and saved three break points he faced in the one hour and 23 minute match.

Djokovic has reached the quarterfinals or better in his four ATP Masters Series appearances this year. He was the best-performed player during the U.S. Masters Series hardcourt swing in Spring, reaching the final of Indian Wells (l. Nadal) and winning Miami (d. Canas).

After fighting off five set points in the first set, Marcos Baghdatis steam rolled his way past Carlos Moya, winning 19 of the first 21 points of the second set en route to a 7-6(7), 6-1 win at the Rogers Masters.

Baghdatis saved four consecutive set points at 2/6 in the tie-break - the best with a topspin backhand lob over an outstretched Moya at 5/6 - and a fifth set point shortly after. The Cypriot closed out the set on his first set point before going on a tear in the second set, during which he lost a total of just nine points, despite serving at just 25 percent in the set. He did not face a break point during the match.

Baghdatis is making his second tournament appearance after losing in the first round last year to Julien Benneteau in three sets

Moya, the oldest player in the current Top 20 ATP Rankings (turns 31 on Aug. 27), captured his 20th career title in Umag (d. Pavel) on clay in his last tournament outing on July 2

Mario Ancic conceded just five points on serve in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Canada's Frederic Niemeyer in his first outing since February. The tall Croat had been sidelined with mononucleosis before returning to the ATP circuit.
