Pakistan win despite Sachin ton

Pakistan surived a mid-innings collapse to snatch a seven-run win over India after bad light forced an early halt in the first one-dayer in Peshawar.

Sachin Tendulkar (100) passed 14,000 runs with his 39th one-day ton as India posted 328 after being put in to bat.

The hosts were cruising at 201-1 after Salman Butt (101) and Shoaib Malik, who made 90 off only 67 balls, put on 151.

Inzamam-ul-Haq was out obstructing the field but Pakistan's 311-7 off 47 overs was enough when the light was offered.

The dark skies and Duckworth/Lewis rule had the final say but victory maintained Pakistan's fine recent record against their neighbours - 11 wins in 16 limited-overs games - after the 1-0 Test series triumph.

India should have batted them out of the game once Tendulkar had answered the critics who questioned his international future following last week's defeat in Karachi.

After Virender Sehwag's early dismissal, the Mumbai maestro dropped anchor while Irfan Pathan and Mahendra Dhoni breezed to half centuries.

Tendulkar survived being bowled off a no-ball from Rana Naved-ul-Hasan on 20 to produce some text-book drives.

He brought up his century off 112 balls and was unlucky to fall off the next ball he faced, adjudged lbw when trying to reverse-sweep off-spinner Arshad Khan.

That was the signal for a collapse which saw the last six wickets fall for 23 runs in 28 balls as Naved (4-62) and Mohammad Asif (3-30) mopped up.

When Butt and Kamran Akmal (25) began the reply with a flurry of boundaries, India's ground record total was starting to look 30 runs short.

Butt's straight driving was particularly impressive as he completed his third one-day century off 109 balls to earn the man of the match award.

Malik then took a shine to left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, whom he lofted over long-on for three big sixes, and the hosts were cruising to victory.

However, Butt thrashed Kartik straight to Rahul Dravid at cover, Malik holed out to the Indian captain at mid-wicket off Shanathakumaran Sreesanth and Shahid Afridi was brilliantly run out by Mohammad Kaif.

The woes spread as Mohammad Yousuf lofted Ajit Agarkar lazily to Zaheer Khan at long-on, before the captain's moment of madness put the result in doubt.

Inzamam was well short of his ground when he hung his bat out to block Suresh Raina's throw from mid-off reaching the stumps and was clearly disgruntled when the umpires sent him on his way.

With the light fading quickly, Razzaq was caught behind off Agarkar before an ill-advised bouncer from Sreesanth put seeds of doubt in the umpires' minds.
